چکیده

In this paper, we take a fresh look at three Popperian concepts: riskiness, falsifiability, and truthlikeness (or verisimilitude) of scientific hypotheses or theories. First, make explicit the dimensions that underlie notion riskiness. Secondly, examine if how degrees falsifiability can be defined, they are related to various concept riskiness as well experimental context. Thirdly, consider relation (expected of) truthlikeness. Throughout, pay special attention probabilistic theories offer tentative, quantitative account verisimilitude for

Truthlikeness, Rationality And Scientific Method

I. A. Kieseppä’s criticism of the methodological use of the theory of verisimilitude, and D. B. Resnik’s arguments against the explanation of scientific method by appeal to scientific aims are critically considered. Since the notion of verisimilitude was introduced as an attempt to show that science can be seen as a rational enterprise in the pursuit of truth, defenders of the verisimilitude pr...

Tractable Falsifiability

We propose to strengthen Popper’s notion of falsifiability by adding the requirement that when an observation is inconsistent with a theory, there must be a “short proof” of this inconsistency. We model the concept of a short proof using tools from computational complexity, and provide some examples of economic theories that are falsifiable in the usual sense but not with this additional requir...

An Economic Index of Riskiness∗

Define the riskiness of a gamble as the reciprocal of the absolute risk aversion (ARA) of an individual with constant ARA who is indifferent between taking and not taking that gamble. We characterize this index by axioms, chief among them a “duality” axiom which, roughly speaking, asserts that less risk-averse individuals accept riskier gambles. The index is homogeneous of degree 1, monotonic w...

A Generalized Measure of Riskiness

T paper proposes a generalized measure of riskiness that nests the original measures pioneered by Aumann and Serrano (Aumann, R. J., R. Serrano. 2008. An economic index of riskiness. J. The paper introduces the generalized options’ impli...

Falsifiability is not optional.

Finkel, Eastwick, and Reis (2016; FER2016) argued the post-2011 methodological reform movement has focused narrowly on replicability, neglecting other essential goals of research. We agree multiple scientific goals are essential, but argue, however, a more fine-grained language, conceptualization, and approach to replication is needed to accomplish these goals. Replication is the general empiri...
